Healthy Mouth in the New Year

Dental health is an important part of our overall wellness, and the New Year is a great time to create resolutions for improving our health.

Why not incorporate taking care of your teeth and gums as we start the New Year?

Daily toothbrushing is a sure and simple way to improve your oral health. For successful bacterial plaque removal, it is important to brush at least twice a day using an appropriately sized, soft-bristle, manual or electric toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste. The daily use of antimicrobial and fluoride mouth rinses also helps to improve your oral health.

In January, schedule an appointment with your dentist for a cleaning and evaluation of any other oral conditions you may be experiencing. Book your next dental appointment while you are at their office.

Commit to flossing as regular use of dental floss removes plaque and helps to prevent the buildup of plaque, which can lead to tartar and periodontal disease.

Cut back on sugar. Harmful oral bacteria actually feed on the sugars you eat to create acids that destroy the tooth enamel. Try to substitute sugary snacks with healthier choices, rink seltzer water instead of soda or chew sugar free gum if you crave something sweet.

Eat healthier foods. Antioxidants and other nutrients found in fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts improve your body’s ability to fight bacteria and inflammation, helping to protect your teeth and gums. In addition, fibrous, crisp fruits and raw vegetables like apples, carrots and celery help clean plaque from teeth and freshen breath.

Stop smoking. Smoking doubles the risk for gum disease. Replace smoking with a healthy activity, get support and help from friends and your doctor if you need it.
