Mouth Guards

Mouth guards not only protect the teeth, but the lips, cheeks, and tongue.

Why are mouth guards important?
Mouth guards not only protect the teeth, but the lips, cheeks, and tongue. They help protect head and neck injuries such as concussions and jaw fractures.

When should someone wear a mouth guard?
Someone should wear a mouth guard if he or she is playing sports such as football, baseball, basketball, soccer, hockey, skateboarding, or wrestling. This would be any activity with a risk of falling or head contact with other players or equipment.

What are the different types of mouth guards?
Choose a mouth guard that will be comfortable to wear.  There are several options to choose from. The “boil-to-fit” mouth guards are very popular and found in sports stores. Customized mouth guards can be provided by a dentist. They cost a bit more, but are more comfortable and more effective in preventing injuries.  Remember to check the wear and tear of the mouthguard often as they may need to be replaced.
